How to Check the Fur-Trimmed Jacket Pattern

The pattern sheet is shown in Fig. 6. To verify print accuracy, a test square measuring 100 × 100 mm is included on the pattern pages. Why is this necessary? Sometimes, printer settings can slightly scale the image. Make sure your printer is set to “Actual Size” or “Scale 100%”. After printing, measure the test square and check the assembled pattern to ensure accuracy and avoid mistakes.

How to Cut and Sew the Fur-Trimmed Jacket

Download and print the pattern, assemble the pages, select your size, and cut the pattern along the outlines. Before cutting the fabric, to avoid mistakes, temporarily secure the paper pattern pieces with small pieces of painter’s tape and try them on the body. Adjust the pattern if necessary.

Materials required for sewing the jacket:

  • 2 ready-made cashmere shawls, 70 × 180 cm, with a floral motif (Fig. 7)
  • 1,6 m of viscose lining fabric
  • 0,6 m of faux “alpaca” fur, 100 cm wide
  • 1 metal shank button, approx. 22 mm diameter
  • Fusible interfacing to reinforce all pattern pieces
  • Small shoulder pads
  • About 0,3 m of elastic cord for the removable fur collar loops
  • 8 flat buttons, 5 mm diameter, for the removable collar
  • Madeira Aerofil sewing thread, N120
  • Madeira Aerofil topstitching thread, N35.

Tip! Before cutting, lay the shawl flat on your cutting table and evaluate the pattern. Identify the most visually appealing motifs to position on the fronts, back, and sleeves. If the shawl has a border, we recommend placing it along the bottom edges of the pieces. Since all pieces are reinforced with fusible interfacing, they can be laid out either along or across the shawl.

Sewing Equipment and Tailoring Accessories Required

For cutting:

For sewing:

Cutting Instructions

From the main fabric (shawl), cut:

  1. Back — 1 piece on fold
  2. Front — 2 pieces
  3. Front facing — 2 pieces (trace separately from the front pattern)
  4. Sleeve — 2 pieces

From faux fur, cut:

  1. Upper removable collar — 2 pieces
  2. Sleeve cuffs (trace from the sleeve pattern along the “Faux Fur Cuff Stitching Line”) — 2 pieces

From lining fabric, cut:

  1. Back — 1 piece on fold
  2. Front (excluding the facing) — 2 pieces
  3. Sleeve — 2 pieces
  • All main and lining fabric pieces should include 1,5 cm seam allowances, and 4 cm at the hem of the back and fronts.
  • Faux fur pieces should include 3 – 4 mm seam allowances. See: How to Cut and Sew Faux Fur

IMPORTANT! As cashmere in ready-made shawls has a soft, open-weave structure, all pattern pieces must be reinforced with fusible interfacing.

There are two ways to do this:

  1. Fully fuse the shawl with interfacing before cutting. This method is quick but uses a large amount of interfacing.
  2. Cut interfacing pieces slightly larger than each pattern piece, mark the pattern outlines on the wrong side of the shawl according to the design, place the interfacing on top, and press. Then trace the outlines, add seam allowances, and cut. This method takes longer but significantly reduces interfacing usage.

Additional areas are reinforced as follows:

  • Strips of fabric cut along the grain: under the armholes, front facings, shoulder seams, and back neckline
  • Sleeve cap: fuse a second layer of interfacing cut separately.

Removable Fur Collar: Only the lining piece of the removable collar is interfaced.

Trim seam allowances to 5 mm; trim the facing seam allowance to 3 mm. Press allowances toward the inside.

Sew the shoulder seams of the back and fronts; press the seams open. Set the lower collar into the back neckline, clipping corners as necessary. Sew the side seams and press allowances open.

Sleeves. Place the faux fur cuff on the right side of the sleeve along the stitching line, fur side out. Fold it up from the stitching line so the wrong side is facing out, align with markings, and sew along the upper edge. Fold the cuff down, turn under the lower edge, and hand-stitch along the sleeve hem, taking care not to catch the fur in the seam.

Sew the sleeve seam, joining the vertical edges of the cuff simultaneously. Press seam allowances open. Turn under and hand-stitch the lower sleeve hem.

Ease the sleeve cap and set the sleeve into the armhole. Attach small shoulder pads.

Lining. For the back and fronts, use quilted lining with synthetic insulation, or quilt the pieces yourself. Stitching cells should measure 5 × 5 cm.

Assemble the lining as usual, sewing shoulder and side seams, as well as sleeve seams. Set the lining sleeves into the armholes, easing slightly at the sleeve cap. Attach the lining to the facings and back neckline, clipping corners as needed. Press seam allowances along the facings toward the lining and finish with a catch-stitch from the lining side.

Turn under the lining hem along the sleeves and hand-stitch to the main sleeve allowances with cross-stitches. Turn under and hand-stitch the hem of the facings and jacket body in the same manner.

Removable Fur Collar

Fuse the lining piece of the removable collar. Cut 8 loops from round elastic, approx. 3 cm each. Pin the loops in place according to markings; loop size should match the button diameter.

Place the fur and lining pieces right sides together and stitch around all edges, leaving a small opening for turning. Turn the collar right side out and press the seams carefully from the lining side. Hand-stitch the opening closed. Attach buttons to the jacket according to the markings.
